The Banjaras of Andhra Pradesh and Lambadis of Rajastan are India's own gypsies. A Banjara woman's costume consists of the "ghaghra", which is a swirling skirt made of red, black and white coars cotton, appliqued and embroidered with pieces of mirrored glass. The waist-band of her skirt has large pieces of mirrios stitched in the tradition. She seldom takes off the armful of metal and bone bangles and anklets. Their love of ornaments sometimes assumes absurd proportions and the jewells become a part of the body. |
